“Success is not final, failure is not fatal…”
You may already have heard about Aron Ralston’s story, or seen the movie, 127 Hours. For those that haven’t, in a nutshell, here’s what happened.
One fine day in May 2003, Aron set off on what he expected would be an enjoyable hike through the mountains in Utah. How wrong he was. Very quickly, the trip turned into his, and indeed anyone’s, worst nightmare. Following an accident, his arm became trapped behind an 800-pound boulder. He was stuck. Badly hurt. And in the middle of nowhere. Worse still, nobody knew he had gone on the trip – he had committed the mortal sin in mountaineering terms of not telling anyone where he was going – and he had no means of communication, so rescue was unlikely.
This is not what I wanted! When communication fails …
I had dinner last weekend with a French friend (thanks Agathe!). She runs her own real estate agency in Annemasse, not too far from Geneva. During the meal she reminded me about a very funny property-related story that happened in France about 10 years ago. I vaguely remembered it, as I think I did use the example in a blog post at the time. Anyway, the story concerned a beautiful property called Chateau Bellevue which was a landmark building in the village of Yvrac, near Bordeaux …
Stay Curious …
In his important book, Why Decisions Fail,[1] Paul Nutt highlighted just how problematic idecision-making is by reporting on a study of nearly 400 business decisions made by senior managers in medium to large organisations which resulted in the alarming statistic that half the decisions made were not up to scratch because “either they were not able to withstand the uncertainty, conflict, or change common in the work environment, or they could not elicit the buy-in necessary to make them stick.” This kind of indictment of managerial decision-making crops up in study after study; it’s not an isolated finding, nor is it an exaggeration to say that many decisions fail in the workplace.
